Résumé
The Well-known association between cr and IPGE (iridium-group platinum-group elements; Os, Ir, Ru, ±Rh) and the similarity in the IPGE contents of chromitites from different settings suggest that the IPGE should parition into chromite. Experiments have shown that IPGE partition into spinel under oxidizing conditions. We have analyzed the IPGE in natural chromites using LA-ICPMS and can show that these elements are all below detection levels. Mass balance calculations show that chromite does not control the IPGE budget. Exsolution of IPGE from chromite in plutonic rocks is not a viable mechanism since we obtained similar results for chormite in lavas. IPGE are undetectable in chromite probably becaus they do not enter the chromite structure at geologically-realistic oxygen fugacities.
